Report on Understanding South Korean Regional Health Markets

South Korea is one of the more dynamic and advanced Asian medical markets with a well established health infrastructure and national health insurance system. Trends in South Korean society, however, present opportunities for medical and pharmaceutical companies. Notably the country’s increasing aged population which stands at 11% of the population is set to reach 20% by 2025. In addition, a push for a slice of the growing global health tourist trade is just one driver in the expansion of advanced facilities.

Identifying opportunities in South Korea’s valuable and rapidly expanding health economy requires detailed knowledge of the economic performance, health infrastructure and health personnel distribution at a state/territory level. Being able to see that in the context of neighbouring provinces and the national picture brings focus to areas of opportunity and need.

Rich in statistics, charts and maps, this new report (June 2012) Understanding Regional South Korean Health Markets takes you further into understanding the dynamic regional health sector. A comprehensive introduction sets the national scene while summary data for each region highlights the key economic characteristics and health infrastructure. Comparative statistics are provided for each region and can be seen in the light of national averages.

How is the population and wealth regionally distributed?
Which provinces produce the highest levels of GDP?
How is the aging population changing the nature of health provision and long-term care?
What is the primary and secondary health infrastructure in each region?
How is healthcare delivered?
What is the changing role played by private/government health provision?Which regions are better provided for and which still need investment?

Access to this report includes the brilliant Espicom Interactive with machine translation into Korean!

Report on Understanding Regional Chinese Health Markets

Any assessment of China must consider the huge variations to be found in such a populous and geographically diverse country.

How is the population distributed? How is healthcare delivered?
Health funding: Who pays, who gets?
What are the real effects of the urban/rural divide on health provision?
Which regions are better provided for and which still need investment?

Identifying opportunities in China’s rapidly expanding health economy requires detailed knowledge of the economic performance and health infrastructure at a regional level. Being able to see that in the context of neighbouring provinces and the national picture, brings focus to areas of opportunity.

Rich in statistics and charts, this new report from Espicom, Understanding Regional Chinese Health Markets is the first in a series on major markets; taking you further into understanding the dynamic Chinese regional health environments.

China represents 31 discrete regional markets, each with provision and needs…
China has been a focus of interest for international business for such a long time now that it has become easy to assess markets and economic performance in national terms. Even the much discussed and fast developing urban areas such as Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin are representative of only a fraction of the widely diverse regional markets to be found elsewhere in the country.

Urban vs. Rural
Understanding the urban/rural divide in China is critical. The number of cities with over a million inhabitants is significant in every province, with migration from rural areas driven by the boom in manufacturing. The economic strength of cities over rural areas has led to an imbalance of health provision; an imbalance the Chinese government is keen to correct through mechanisms such as the New Co-operative Medical System.

This new report provides a new level of market detail
Understanding Regional Chinese Health Markets lets you drill down into the Chinese regional markets to make a practical evaluation of opportunity and risk. Whether you are manufacturing or distributing medical products locally, working through agents or just assessing the potential, this fascinating report is a must-have resource “to fully understand” the variable regional market environments in China.

A case in point – Anhui Province: The rural challenge
Anhui Province has 61.3 million people – 4.6% of the national population. The capital and largest city is Hefei, with a population of around 3.4 million and other major cities include Huainan (1.9 million), Huangshan (1.5 million) and Ma’anshan (1.4 million). The province is largely agricultural, with 35.5 million people classed as rural. Anhui has one of the lowest GDP per capita rates in the country and in 2009, it had a GDP of US$147.3 billion, equal to 2.8% of national GDP.

Anhui has below average rates of hospital beds, physicians and nurses, which can be attributed to the province’s low GDP per capita rate and large rural population. Health is delivered via a bewildering array of services including 17,788 village clinics, 1,714 health centres and 710 hospitals, of which 489 are general and 125 are specialist facilities.

Anhui is lacking in terms of healthcare workforce, with below national average rates for physicians (1.0 per ‘000) and nurses (1.1 per ‘000). However, the rural nature of the province is reflected in the higher than national average rate of village doctors, at 0.9 per ‘000 population.

Report on Understanding India’s Regional Health Markets

Understanding India’s Regional Health Markets lets you explore regional Indian markets to make a practical evaluation of opportunity and risk. Whether you are manufacturing or distributing locally, working through subsidiaries/partners or just assessing the potential, this fascinating report is a must-have resource to fully appreciate the diverse regional health environments in India.

Identifying opportunities in India’s rapidly expanding health economy requires detailed knowledge of the economic performance, health infrastructure and health personnel distribution at a state/territory level. Being able to see that in the context of neighbouring provinces and the national picture brings focus to areas of opportunity and need.

Any assessment of India’s health provision must consider the huge variations to be found in such a geographically diverse country where the population is distributed over 644,278 cities, towns and villages. Key questions asked and answered by this report include:

How is the population and wealth distributed?
Which states and territories produce the highest levels of GDP?
What is the primary and secondary health infrastructure in each region?
How is healthcare delivered?
What is the role played by private/government health provision at state level?
Which regions are better provided for and which still need investment?

Rich in statistics, charts and maps, this new 110-page report Understanding Regional Indian Health Markets takes you further into understanding the dynamic Indian regional health sector. A comprehensive introduction sets the national scene while summary data for each state/territory highlights the key economic characteristics and health infrastructure. Comparative statistics are provided for each state/territory and can be seen in the light of national averages.

Setting the scene
India’s 1.21 billion population is distributed across 35 states and union territories, and is growing at 1.6% a year. In terms of landmass, India is approximately one third the size of the USA. India has an established mainly urban middle class but the bulk of the rest of the population have little by way of income and resources.

As with many emerging markets a divide is opening up between the urban and rural population. This is exacerbated in India where, despite there being over 45 cities with more than 1 million inhabitants, the majority of the population live rurally in over 638,000 villages – many of them remote and difficult to access. The impact on key health indicators, such as infant mortality, can be clearly seen and despite per capita health spending more than doubling in the last 10 years there is some way to go.

Government health spending has not kept pace with private expenditure with health insurance covering no more than 5%. Out of pocket funding of healthcare remains dominant and the growing number of middle classes have been influential in the growth and success of the many private hospital groups.

Compare and Contrast: Haryana and Rajasthan: The Indian market is one of great diversity, and the gap between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ is stark. Consider the following comparisons of selected statistics between the two neighbouring north western states of Haryana and Rajasthan which have dramatically different economic drivers.
